fancy indicators

Postby stuartrobbie » Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:15 pm

I had marker lights from a DAF CF along the side of the van, with some clever trickery and a few relays they now flash with the indicators. doesnt sound flashy but the work involved in making a single unit work as a marker light and an indicator was probably more of an effort than people think

so during the day with lights off they are indicators, at night with lights on they are on until i indicate an whatever side it is flashes. never seen this done on a van so thought i would upload a wee video incase someone else wants it but wasnt sure of the outcome. :)

Nice ones you have in the grill, and looks pretty good with the indicator.

In all honesty in haven't a clue how its done, my brother did it as I use the van for work, he uses it as a night time project after his work haha.

Ill try and explain the bits I remember. The significance seems to be in a 5 pin relay that switched the circuit when you go from no lights to lights on, so they are tapped into the earth side of the indicators as that's how to vans original indicator relay works. There is a permanent live feed to LEDs, thus, the relay actually switches them off. When the lights are switched on the relay switches and the live feed powers the lights on but when the indicator is pressed the 5 pin relay switches the live feed off, in the same way the vans original indicators work.

Some more technical minded people might find a flaw in that as I didn't get all the details I just let him do it. It can't be a major job for a compitant person a it took him just a few hours to change from marker lights to lights and indicators, that included adding in the relays(1 used for either side) and running new 2 core cable from rear marker lights.

Ill try and get more details when I see him again, they don't work on the hazards yet, he is yet to troubleshoot a way to do that.

If you use ordinary bulbs in the side repeaters you need NOTHING EXTRA to make them flash

with your indicators......Been doing this for years

OK I'll spill the beans..

Just earth the repeaters to the indicator supply

Making them indicators is easy, making 1 led unit work as indicators AND sidelights at the same one was difficult, I can't explain how it's done anymore than above, like said above I cheated and didn't do it myself, my brother did it all and he isn't a member on here and isn't one for forums, ill try and get him to draw a wiring diagram ;)

i used to have loads of those timelapse videos but lost some during the great laptop crash of 2012! hence why everything gets backed up on flickr and photobucket now. its not a sped up video but a photo every second. if you have an iphone, download iMotionHD. im currently driving coaches for a living so go to some pretty spectacular places and makes for great videos :D

Dammit, not the great laptop crash of 2012! Everyone remembers where they were on that day, so sorry you were involved, one day you will have to tell more, only when youre ready though.
