Led or light emitting diodes, are as they say, a diode, that is that they pass current one way only, so first off you have to have the polarity correct. Next is the tricky bit, depending on colour they have a maximum voltage before they pass to much current (blow up basically). Anything up to about 3v is fine, but after that you need to limit the current to about 20ma.
So you have a few choices.
1 buy an led that's made for 12v ( has inbuilt chip to cope)
2 wire 4 together in a daisy chain style so they split the 12v
3 add a resistor to EACH led, something like 500 ohms normally works, and make it 1/4 or 1/2 watt.
Loads of people sell "12v" LEDs now since they are popular for vehicles, and they even come pre wired too generally.
As for wiring to the van, there is a ignition live in the engine bay fuse box, it's well covered on the forum, here's mine, note the new red wire and fuse

This is live when engine runs, don't run too much from it, I used it to run a relay that then runs all I need.
As for wiring, it's quite hostile in these areas, so use soldered connections and heat shrink all joins. Don't forget to fuse it too, better to blow a fuse than start a fire.
