Extra seats insurance shocker!

Postby perlnumquist » Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:44 am

Today I am having a double bench seat fitted in the back of my van. My insurance has jumped 200 quid as a result!!!!

Does this seem normal or is that bloody bulldog taking the p*ss?

Well, I reckon next year, it should come down as my no claims will have increased a little (incidentally: You should see how easily a honda civic disassembles when you revers your van into it at even half a mile an hour!).

But it just seems to me that there is no recourse with insurance companies. If they say thats what it costs, then thats what you have to pay.

Still, I have been out sitting in it and figure its still worth it :-)

None of them have a monopoly, shop around it normally pays off. Just make sure that you're getting quotes for the same thing as the cheapest isn't always the best as is proved here time and time again.

I agree, however if you make a modification halfway through the policy then they know they have you by the short and curlies as you are unlikely to cancel and go elsewhere. Some insurers take advantage of this and charge stupid fees for the mods.

Very true, as i have just done a drive way entrance for a mate so he can park off road, he had 2 quotes from the same insurer for on & off road parking which was £50 less per month, so he was under the impression that once he could park on a drive he would get the reduction now they have said sorry but its still the same price, so he has canceled his insurance and gone else where, plus managed to get a refund.

Well, i tried three companies and that took most of a saturday morning. 730 was the cheapest. I think the issue was that the seats were a recent addition i.e. I was having thenm done that day. This meant they got all confused and had to "refer to the technical department" who seemed in each case to be a little risk averse.

Next year, I just say "I have a van with four seats in I want to insure" and I reckon it will be back down around the 400 mark.

I did shop around though.

I was planning to have the windows fitted at some point this year. Do you normally have to tell the insurance company about windows?
I bough the laast one with windows in and it never was required information.

Tell them everything. If you van has anything that's different from the day it left the factory then they need to know.

Ask 'em if it's any cheaper if you take out the front passenger seat and don't carry passengers......

Looks like you have basically got a camper conversion there - could try Adrian Flux or one of the others that specialize in "self builds"? That's what I intend to do (hopefully if I have everything done by renewal date!).

The oddest thing about this is that if I remove any seats from my 17 seater the insurance company (Wrightsure) need proof that it has been done by a professional in case it is dangerous! I can understand when putting seats in, but not when taking them out.
