Painting a van with hammerite

Postby dantranvan » Mon Mar 03, 2014 10:53 pm

Anyone done it?

My van is starting to get a few rust bubbles appearing and got a few scratches and dents so thinking of going matte black to tidy it up.

Can I just roller it on or will I need to do thin it out? Will I need to sand before painting?

Any pics of hammerited vans and tips would be much appreciated

Dont do it on a really hot day.

I can (just about) remember my dad painting his morris marina van with blue hammerite about 30 years ago. Pretty sure he used a brush. Really hot sunny day and the paintwork did this lovely orange peel effect.

Would of been great in an actual orange colour, and maybe an outspan logo

This probably not much help; just thought I'd share

Only thinking of hammerite as most of the companies selling the military truck paint etc on ebay won't deliver it to the iom :?

I reckon hammerite would be fine; I think some varieties also contain a rust killer/ inhibitor. Not particularly cheap though is it?

From some research for my own bus colour change a paint called 'Rustoleum' is meant to be good. Can be put on with a roller and even self levels to some extent.
I havent got that far with the build so cant comment from personal experience I'm afraid.

Hammerite is not really suitable, only good on cast metals. Zinc primer is a cheap DIY get by. At the end of the day rust is rust, no magic cures.

Tractor/machinery paint is cheap, can be brushed/rollered . Its enamel paint, like Hammerite, I've painted a few things with it over the years, its tough, doesn't look too bad, and it seems to be as good as anything else. Lots on ebay etc.

As said previously Rustoleum and Rustoleum Combi colour are the best for hand painting. Plenty of those chaps on Ebay. Surely someone would deliver to you.

I sprayed mine with white smooth hammerite diluted with hammerite thinners

i didn't rub it down that much but it has done a good job it was done about a year ago

it cost me about 120 quid in paint but it wouldn't spray to good with there recommended mix

i mixed it with a bit more thinners until it looked right

you have to put thinner coats on and more of them

i painted straight over blue paint so took more

it has lasted well and it was only ment as a quick fix

the good thing is if it needs touching up just open a can and paint away

ive only got a small compressor so had to do small sections at a time

hope it helps

I did a mk2 years back with gloss paint, just used a foam roller. Came out surprisingly well. 2.5 litres did a swb low roof.
