yes i think the best position would be MT75 as it is in the transit and TDi as it is in the passat - in the passat its cranked over to the right (drivers side) as far as i know - and from what i gather 20degrees although it is the wrong way for me i think it'd be ok space wise :)

another potential donor here :arrow:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Passat-TDI ... TQ:GB:1123
bit concerned over the oil in water thing :? is that an issue on these engines :?:

tempted to get it if it goes for £200 - (cant be worth much more with it having no 4th gear) at least i'll have an engine to play with

Never known a VAG to do a head gasket mate, so likely just the oil cooler as the seller says.
Worth replacing if you do get it, lower oil temp will increase turbo life expectancy.

Standard electronic AFN motor, 145 Lb/ft torque, MTDI, 195 @2400 RPM, Works out at 90 BHP @ 2400 RPM, if their dyno is accurate , so much for electronics.

well slight update on this i have this morning purchased a passat :D i was after an AFN 110ps one but the one ive bought i'm not sure :? i'll post some pics but in the photos it looked like it had silver TDI badges but close up you can see the DI was once red - and driving it back it pulls like a train  so i'm not sure if i've slipped up and bought a 130ps one

it was 1st reg on 31-5-2000

on the plus side it only cost me £265 and i've just put £10 diesel in and its drove back from birmingham 8)

checked the plate and it's an ATJ engine :|

which looked up is an 85 kilowatts (116 PS; 114 bhp) @ 4,000 rpm; 310 newton metres (229 lbf·ft) @ 1,900 rpm

it does go well for a 114bhp :D

have i slipped up with this engine? is it complicated electronically? should i get an AFN one or do the conversion with this one?

ATJ has the later "Pumpe Duse" unit injection system, they are pretty reliable but more complex than the earlier engines.

You would be advised to peruse the VW forums for transplant info, but you will have to figure out the electronics, immobiliser, dashboard etc, no mechanical option on this one.

cheers Andy - that manual is spot on 8)

what do you think go for it with this one or flog it on and keep looking for an earlier AFN one :?: i'm keen to start it with this as it cost so little  i'm thinking if i start the conversion with this i can always convert to AFN half way through all the mounts etc. will be the same  and at least getting it physically mounted would be a big step :D

I suppose it's down to personal choice, I'd MTDI an AFN, because it's much more simple and easier to install, in a transplant situation, there's much less wiring for the installation, and much less to go wrong afterwards. If you're happy with the extra complication of the electronic systems, complete with a barrow load of wiring, then go for it, I'd wager it'd be more reliable than if you were to fit a Mk 6/7 engine.

I'd bet I'm one of the cheapest members on the forum, (ask Tim  ) I don't give a toss about bells and whistles, I want to spend as little as possible, and still get reliable motoring with reasonable performance/economy, without getting any nasty, expensive surprises. Old VAG cars, with the 1.9 TDI, Audi 80, VW Passat, have served me well over the last 10+ years, 20,000 miles per year, no breakdowns due to engine management, or mechanical problems, with fantastic performance and economy, for what they are ( they don't seem prone to rust either ) with just regular servicing and the odd ball joint etc. I see little prospect of me MTDIing them or changing brands in the near future.
