Any fibreglass boffins on here?

Postby frank308d » Mon Sep 29, 2014 10:12 pm

Hi all,
Looking at doing a few bits of fibreglass fab on the van interior and wouldn't mind a few pointers on mould making etc and any obvious idiot mistakes to avoid please? Had a look round the net but it seems to be chavs expanding foam bumpers or big sub boxes. Are the techniques roughly the same? Thanks. Frank

I think it basically revolves around making a decent mould first of whatever part you want and building it up out of layers of fiberglass until the right thickness is achieved

I looked at some of the videos because I was tempted to try and make some side mouldings for my van because they are stupid money

I couldn't be bothered in the end. I bet you could make some money though making copies of hard to find bits like the door mouldings and stuff if you could do them well and reasonably cheap. I couldn't believe just one side door moulding is over £50.

I got 25l of resin cheap from a place that made surf boards, I think you need different types of mating for particular applications.

What you want to know I use to be a GRP laminator done everything from boat building, plug and mould making as well as finishing when something comes out of a mould also flat roofs.

For making moulds you will need release agents like PVA that will help release you also need to make sure you have good release angles. Some moulds will need to be a 2 part mould or have a blow hole to release from but depends what you wanting to take a mould from.

If you can show me what you wanting to copy I can offer you more advice
