"Converting" a 6 Stud to a 5 Stud Wheel Carrier

Postby CamperVanBeethoven » Mon Jul 11, 2016 9:34 pm

So I thought I'd found a bargain on ebay, when I got a spare wheel carrier for a mere £35, only to find out it was for the wrong kind of wheel! The one I bought was for a 6 stud 15 inch wheel; but I had 5 stud 14 inch wheels ... :(

The only place the correct ones seem to come from is Mr Ford at a mere ... £200!

I stood there with this useless wheel hanger and contemplated my situation. Looked at pictures of the 14 inch hanger and the 15 inch one. Hmm. So the 14 inch one only has a bolt on one side. A proper hanger would cost me £200. An angle grinder costs £50.

You can see where this is going ... :D

Tomorrow, once the paint has dried and if the weather is good, will follow a photo of the thing in situ (providing I've found a wheel nut to hold in the spare wheel. There's a motor factors up the road from where I work so I should find one there ...

It's not perfect. The bolt will end up a bit squint, so I might need to hammer and bend it a bit tomorrow to make it fit better ... but a damn sight better than spending £200 on another one!

I was thinking, I might Araldite a lump of rubber on the end as well to take up any gap on the side I cut ... I don't think the neighbours were impressed with me using an angle grinder in the middle of the street. Curtains were twitching for sure ;)

Finally, it's fitted. And now that the bits of wood I'd installed to hold it down are removed, you can see how it gives me back a substantial amount of storage space :)

PS The thread on the wheel hanger is apparently 'M12 coarse' - not sure what pitch that is exactly ....
