Q: MkIV axles on MkII

Postby Injection » Sun Sep 25, 2016 8:43 am

So I have 2 Transits:

First one's MkII '81 100L Kombi 2.0 57kW.

The second, the donor, is a '93 MkIV 100L 2.5TD 63kW.

I am going to swap the diesel engine into MkII. Also I wonder how well MkIV-s axles fit to it. Just beacause I'm guessing that they're a little more modern and parts are easier and cheaper to get.
As MkII is still going to be transported to me, I haven't had a closer look at it's axles.

What are either axle's pros and cons? Is the swap worth it?

the axle will fit but without the flared wheel arches you will only just fit the wheels under

but as for modern parts they arn't really much different - the actual cw&p is intechangable but the entire diff is not as the half shafts are different sizes

i swapped a mk5 axle onto my mk1 lwb but i only did it to get rid of the twin rear wheels and the high diff ratio

this is mine

if you do fit the axle all you'll need to do is turn round the shock mounts as they face the opposite way mk4 and mk5

Sounds good. What can you tell about front axle? I know, MkIV has steering rack, I suppose that MkII has box type still.

yes mk4/5 have a rack and mk2 has a box - not an easy swap but it is possable i have done it twice and a few other have too

when it's done it is much better to drive as i had a cosworth engine fitted - but with my mk1 lwb i have kept the beam axle and fitted a power box - the van isnt as quick so its ok

Really nice flares you have on it. What are they exactly?
