how do you setup a 12" subwoofer & box???

Postby swbdave » Mon Apr 22, 2013 5:43 pm

As the title, how do you setup a 12" subwoofer & box??? i have just fitted one in my van today, i have turned the bass off on the head unit

the bass box amp has 3 controls, frequency, bass boost & gain

i'm effin clueless how to set up one of these things!!!! i presume gain is a master volume, frequency, i have no clue what to do with? it go's from 50htz to 250htz & bass boost???? clueless as i thought thats what the bass box did anyways!

my head unit is an aldi tevion brand 4x45watts
door speakers are stock/OE 30watt mk5 transit jobbys
i have tweeters in the doors also which made a big differance to the crispness of the sound, suprised me how much differance they make
my subwoofer box is an EDGE 12" with built in amp, i think its 900watts

i'm clueless with car stereo gear-i've just fitted it all & trying to make everthing look factory-ish, i have no rear speakers yet, i have some cheapo 13cm 3 way ones from maplins i think they are about 150/200watts i have'nt fitted them yet!

i've also got some tweeters with built in crossovers-i dont know what that means though???? i was hoping to put them in the back of the van with the maplin 13cm 3 way speakers or possibly the headlining as my mk5 is a swb minibus but with a futon rather than seats

i'm just trying to put together a better but budget £££ stereo in my van & make it sound half decent

any car stereo advice is appreciated chaps

the biggest arse is routing all the cables out if sight so it looks good & works well

how have you connected the bass box to the head uint, do you have power to the Bbox?.. does it have a remote wire connection for powering it up?

yeah its on & on/working i just dont know how to set it so i dont sound like a dickhead going down the street, i dont really want it so other people here it too much

i put the bass box in as the standard speakers are a bit weak in the bass tones when the stereo is loud so my thinking is if i keep the bass notes/tones out of the door speakers & in the bass box then i "hopefully" wont blow the speakers when i have it loud on longer journeys

i dont know what you do with the 3 control nobs on the bass box

gain
frequency
bass boost

i have them all just above the lowest setting at the moment, it sounds alot better now but i know it could sound better, i just dont know what to do to make it sound better

i have everything set to 0 or what i think you call flat on the head unit apart from the treble which i have on number 4

my theory is if i can make reggae sound really clear with decent bass on the setup i have then all other music type should sound great too

set the levels on the head unit all to the middle,

bass boost on the amp to 0

Frequency to around about the middle

Turn stereo to around 70% volume and slowly turn gain up untill the sub sounds good

Once thats done you adjust the bass boost to increace the bass to where you want it

cheers guy, i'll have a fanny around with that tomorrow before i head out

i dont know if this makes sence? PICTURE THIS!!! say if i'm parked up at santa pod having a cuppaT & a bacon butty i have the front doors shut but sliding door open

when you walk away from the van i'd like it to sound like a home hifi not tinny-does that make sence

i know its alot harder to replicate in a van especially i spose with a "proper" budget stereo system but if i can get it in the ball-park-ish i'd be well chuffed

my van is having to do some big milage this week with my 2 speaker, 2 tweeter & bass-box system so it'll definately be easier to mess with the settings & see if i can impress myself anyways LOL :D

i'm not looking forward to routing the speaker cables for the rear fo the van, i have to take up the rear floor, climbing under the van its been bolted down all around
even bolts i cant get to that means i'll have to at least lower the fuel tank to get to them which is a bit of a mare!

but the rear floor needs replacing so so it'll be a big-ish job that's allow me to do a few other jobs & possibly route extra cables for futre stereo bits/bobs

its amazing the differance a half decent sound from the stereo makes to get rid of that van feeling........

guy great bit of advice on the rough setup bud, just come back home from birmingham volume on 38 (maximum is 40) & it was fookin loud as heck!!!

i dont get that boom boom boom or dumpfh dumpfh dumpfh untill the volume is above about 28

need to play with the bass frequency a little more on break tomorrow but reggae sounds pretty decent now what it'll be like ith

i listen to everything from jonny cash to annie mac amped, cindi lauper to ac-dc/motorhead nicky thomas to the pogues, i have a right good range of tunes on the ipod! :D

great to have a decent sound for once!

what it'll be like when i add rear speakers i dont know

a subwoofer box & tweeters make a massive differance to a standard setup!!!!!
