Motor Factor Prices

Postby Shitlaptop » Tue May 07, 2013 10:51 am

Just after some opinions if possible.

Looking at giving the Transit a service (MK5 on an X plate).

Obviously called around a couple of local motor factors for prices and im a little shocked.

Ive asked for

Timing belt kit (Kit comes with tensioner)
water pump
5ltrs of coolant (gives a 50/50 mix)
10ltrs of 10w 40 (I know 15w 30 is better but budget tight and its Summer)
Oil filter
Air filter

Euro car parts £128 (With 25% code..should have paid last night as fair bit was 50% off...bugger  )
Unipart £200 (Said Euro parts were s**t and wouldn't use them if last company on earth,(hardly professional) )
Cheap local factors £137 (Coolant he insists MUST be red...not the Blue im currently using from Europarts).

So baring in mind im on a tight budget...how does the above sound price wise.

I guess ebay MIGHT be a few quid cheaper...but id rather collect.

Think your right and the guy (assume just staff) was actually quite arsey on the phone when I said "I don't suppose you can move a little...like £70"...that's when he started to slag off Euro parts.

If that was a main dealer I could understand as the argument for Genuine opposed to motorfactors would hold water, but motor factor A slagging off Factor B is just silly..

Must admit seems like a fair bit of kit for £128 ish.... 8)

Yeah I would expect to pay about £130 from my factors for those bits... you missed the fuel filter though?

Key thing there is to make sure the belt is a reasonable one - gates is.

On the subject of coolant:-

Red/pink is the proper one if you're changing it, but blue is ok if you're adding to stuff already there, but don't mix the two :)

Thanks guys...Yes good point fuel filter, must add that to the list...Thanks Minormatt.

The coolant is being flushed so yes I guess I should go with red...but the blue was starting when it was minus 10 so should be ok.

Belt is Dayco I believe.

The red stuff has the correct corrosion inhibitors for this engine, so definitely use that if you are flushing through 8)

I wouldn't fit a dayco belt (although its probably fine)

I would use Ford/Gates/Quinton Hazell (gone bust :( ) or SKF

10ltrs of 10w 40 (I know 5w 30 is better but budget tight and its Summer)

Di will run any oil.... if it's struggling to start in the winter it's probably the battery that's poor, not the oil! Mine was, Idin't bother wasting money changing any oil, just bought a new battery ;)

Genuine parts are not out the way. Its just getting them fitted at a main stealer is what drains the finances.
I always use genuine filters.

No starts lovely, was hitting down to minus 10c and still starting first time, normaly on 80% - 100% clean cooking oil as well.

Lovely big brand new battery fitted just before last winter.

Just changing oil as its well over due and looks pretty gloopy...so might as well.
