I thought it was cos someone walked out of Ty Glas with 150000 blank V5s................. but you can blame the EU if it make you happy.

Yes it is because of the stolen blank V5s

That was 6 years ago. The stolen documents were easy enough to spot as they were all printed incorrectly and a wrong colour on one page, hence why they were sent for destruction, where they were stolen. But like everything else in life no one bothered to read the warning that were issued at the time, and as less than 1000 of the docs turned up anyway, hardly constitutes issuing 20 million + new documents does it.

They were changed this time around as the new ones have space for the extra info concerning type approval required by the EU, and not to mention the way you scrap vehicles has changed BY LAW. If you look there is no self scrapping section now as technically you cannot do that. (thats another argument for another thread).
That's what I like about forums, when some one knows something for fact, you get everyone else dispute it cos they heard different down the pub.

To the OP,Your other V888 method may work, but if you've already spoken or written to DVLA, there may possibly already be a marker on the system which may or may not flag up. But its worth a try. Failing that I suggest you find a "friendly" policeman to do a check.

Bit of good news! I found the original V5 partly rotted away in a box with a load of old receipts etc, in a shed, next to the garage where the car was stored.

So thanks everyone for your suggestions, but thankfully it's now probelem solved :)

Ok, so if you know something for a fact. (see above)

Can you explain what the DVLA mean by this then??

Q. Why have you sent me a new V5C?

A. We are replacing all existing blue V5Cs.

The new certificate is being introduced following the theft of a number of blank blue V5Cs. The aim is to reduce the risks to motorists of buying a stolen or cloned vehicle. For tips and advice go to

Don't see any mention of EU type approval or scrapping in there
