Mk5 transit inner arch / shock top mount rotten

Postby Liam85 » Fri Oct 10, 2014 8:59 pm

Hi bit new to all this so just wondering ....
Recently brought a mk5 smiley swb engine runs sweet as a nut but body has seen better days, hit a rather large pot hole yesterday and since then I have had a horrendous knocking noise from the passenger side suspension area , jacked it up had a little poke around underneath and couldn't see any problems until I looked under the wheel arch the whole area is rotten as a pear and has actually broken away and cracked :( was wondering is it possible to cut this out and replace with another section from another van ? Any help would be great :D thanks all

Quite a common problem with Mk4 and 5's (not with Mk3's) due to the fact that the top mount reinforcement plate is spot welded to the inner wing and when the original sealant fails water gets between the two and the resulting rust eats the inner wing away

there isn't a repair panel available and the likelihood is that as most of them are in the same (or getting there) condition you will struggle to find one in a breaker's that would be worth using so the best option is to repair yours (it can and has been done many times) Its an awkward area to repair due to its position but with patience a good strong repair can be carried out :)
