Cleaning out egr and inlet manifold

Postby Crankshaft » Fri Sep 30, 2016 5:31 pm

Took my egr and inlet manifold off whilst changing the timing solenoid on my mk6 90ps and needless to say they were filthy.
The egr was almost completely blocked and the inlet wasn't as bad but still full of greasy carbon.

I've used solvent degreaser in the past, but had some no nonsense heavy duty degreaser from screwfix from another job, decided to give that a go, amazing results, this stuff eats carbon.

Mixed it way stronger than recommended at 4 parts water to 1 part degreaser, scraped the majority off and poured it in, left to soak for half an hour then poured what looked like black crude oil out. Scraped the stubborn bits with a screwdriver and bottle brush then gave it another soak. Almost like new now.

Good job and Pics, I am waiting on a set of new inlet manifold seals so I can do mine, not looking forward to it.

Cheers

Hello there Crankshaft,

I too have undertaken this dirty task and got the EGR, Inlet manifold, and the intercooler and both it's hoses totally clean and crud free. Now tell me this esteemed Transit experts, I am going to blank the EGR off but do I reconnect both the sensor plugs? Also in the pic below is it possible to cut that pin out as it's essentially a restriction innit? Thanks in advance.

That 'pin' you see is the butterfly valve edge on, if you're going to blank it off what's the point in hacking the valve out?. Reconnect the plugs the pcm needs to see the valve moving.

Im thinking of doing the same to my own van.
Apart from a new inlet gasket, is there any other parts i should get just incase anything gets damaged or broken?

Don't tink so Paudie, buy Gunk degreaser and Mr. Muscle oven cleaner and keep scraping away at what you can see, I kept soaking the affected parts in degreaser ferra few hours then flushed them out with the garden hose, then back into the degreaser, so on and so forth. I inspected the inside of the intercooler and inlet manifold with a bore scope and it's **MINT** inside and out now. I also removed the old clogged up pollen filter and binned it and i'm not going to replace it. It's all a time consuming task I can tell ya!

How ya, mine is a (dual) rear wheel drive crew cab tipper 2.4. It's fun trying to access the inlet manifold bolts! I removed the wipers, scuttle panel, trim etc, then removed the EGR and the pollen filter housing to make access to the aforementioned bolts easier. Really go to town on cleaning out the crud from the EGR and the inlet manifold is my advice. I also blanked off my EGR while I was in there.

Paudie, simply identify which type of EGR ya have by looking at the pics on the ebay sellers page. Fitting takes about 1 minute (in my case) as all ya gotta do is slacken off 2 bolts, slide in the blanking plate, retighten the 2 bolts, drink tea and eat cake. Very very very easy to do.
