Buying a transit instead of car

Postby ProperMint » Tue Nov 29, 2016 11:26 pm

Hi all
Currently looking at getting a new(to me) car. All of my previous cars haven't been economic and high sided and slow. I commute forty miles three times a week on the motorway for work and other than that just potter about. I don't at all require a van for work but absolutely love transits and always wanted one and always have a massive grin on my face on the occasions Iv driven one. I'm not too fussed about the motorway performance / parking around town as I'm used to that. Does anyone use their tranny as a daily? What are the positives and negatives? What they like on fuel as a general rule?
Cheers

You get to sit up high, they have better mirrors, the boots big.

Running lightly loaded, I reckon 30odd mpg

Yes a few people use a van as a daily driver Mr Loot and Mr Tango spring to mind, I use mine for both my business and pleasure.

I prefer to drive the van instead of the car for the following reasons,

1, its higher up so you get a better view
2, most people move out of the way
3, more spacious up front
4, never have a problem getting the shopping in
5, you have the room in the back just in case you need to move anything big
6, insurance is cheaper than my car
7, you can make a day van/ camper out of them
8, you can get away with customising it your own way

Bad parts of using a van as a daily driver,

1, limited to where you can part (multi story car parks are a no go) and some car parks have barriers at 2m
2, tip permits are a pain
3, bigger to wash
4, people are cheeky and expect you to move stuff for them

Fuel wise swb low roof is your best bet on fuel economy I get around 35mpg but my vans 1/2 to 3/4 loaded most of the time with ladders on the roof.

Someone will be along to add to the list am sure. N

If you buy a van that's says £xxxx plus vat you pay the vat, if you buy a van that say £xxxx no vat you don't pay any vat.

You see if the company who bought the van new claimed the vat back (vat registered company) then the vat gets passed on to the next owner if the next owner isn't vat registered they cant claim it back and can not add vat on when selling. N

My van is my daily driver and i love the way transits drive. My insurance is about £30 a month, fully comp and used for commuting and personal use.
Mine is empty 99% of the time and does about 40 mpg so cost wise if you only get one job a month with it itll pay for the van to be on the road.

My wife's car died a few weeks ago - It's beyond saving, so now she's driving my Mondeo Estate.

I now get to use my van every day. It's being turned into a campervan, so it's keeping it warmed up.

Silver linings and all that. :D :D :D
