Pros / Cons Single or Twin Battery Mk7

Postby Rubz » Tue Jan 24, 2017 1:49 pm

Afternoon all,

What are the pros and cons of a twin battery over a single?

My mk7 2.2 fwd has a single battery but seen a few people convert to a twin.

Just looking to see if its worth the time/ money / effort of adding a second battery.

cheers all,

Euan

Punto has the stuff you need it's in the sale section.

The main and overall bonus to twin battery setup is that, provided you maintain 2 good batteries you'll never go flat by accident.

Imagine if you went to do a bank raid and you left the lights on  that could be embarrassing, especially when you have to explain to the wife and kids that you, Charlie and knuckles are doing a stretch in the klink

The above scenario generally can't happen on twin battery system.

Down side is that when the front battery dies, you have to rely on your Jedi powers to spot it, usually tell tale faults occur tho. :-)

If you frequently use things powered from the van with engine off, it's worth it.
If you don't, then it's up to you, but I reckon it's still worth it!

Some folk have been known to leave dash cams plugged in  , and even Chinese USB sockets, which can flatten the battery after a few days of not using the van :(

Having a separate starter battery, isolated from the rest of the system is ideal for such folk, and you have the added bonus of additional starting amps in cold weather 8)

Ideally, the same size and capacity, but as they're not connected together when discharging, it's not essential.
I wouldn't use a smaller one than the original, as it may need to start the van on it's own if the other battery is flattened or goes faulty
