Spare wheel size

Postby rimotu66 » Sat Jan 28, 2017 12:30 pm

Read another thread in the Custom section and it got me thinking.

I have fitted 16" Custom alloys to my Mk7 and never gave the spare a thought, trouble is the steel wheels are 15", do I need to get a 16" for a spare?

Why? :-)

Personally i like to have alloys x5 with the same make tyres x5 so if i need to use the spare i can and there's no major need to fix the puncture and refit it asap.

That's ideally what i like.

But given that the mk7 is known for spares going missing :? I'd have a crap steel with barely legal tye on it, 15" is fine if it is original to the van, you'll get a few warning lamps on and the esp kicks in when you drive off but i think it turns off once you've been warned.

A nono would be to have a spare that doesn't actually fit on to the hubs lol.

Custom 16"tyres are slightly different to mk7 tyres ie 215 75 16 (mk7) 215 65 16(custom iirc) so you'll need a suitably wheel and tyre combo. :-)

Typo?

My Custom wheels are indeed 215 65 16" I cannot remember what the original steels are apart from been 15" and I thought it was 205?, I do know the spare under the van is a brand new tyre.

They would have been 195/70/15's

And as I found out, you should really have a spare with the same rolling radius.
Because last time I had to use the spare I got 2miles down the road and the van dropped into limp mode and lit up like a Christmas tree due to abs/esp faults do to incorrect signal inputs from to odd sized wheel :?

You'll need 205/75/15 to give you the same rolling radius as the 215/65/16, if such a size exists in a commercial tyre
It's 2mm different, so hopefully your ABS won't notice that :P

Yes 15s are that size originally, i was referring to the standard 16s steel in comparison lol probably should have mensioned it

Youcould probably score a steel custom wheel with tyre and it'll match up (double check the spare tyre size) :-)
