Rust, rust and a bit more rust

Postby TrannyMcNanny » Mon May 29, 2017 4:42 pm

So I have a really rusty Transit. It was a very bad auction buy (I have scalded myself enough for that one).

I knew about 2 days after buying it that it was a bit of a bucket, I had to learn to weld and replace the sliding door sil as it was being held together by the paintwork.

When I took the floor up there was some old rust repair behind the cab seats (no divider) and I scooped a fair amount of flaked metal and grime out of the bodywork at this stage.

Today I decided to take the rubber matting up in the front as it was wet on the underside - as has become a common with this van I discovered more rust and holes.

So this is a thread to just show off some of the damage, and also to say "Is that a supporting beam and should I be worried about the structural integrity of the van?"

I feel it's unlikely to make it through its next MOT anyway so might be time for a new van when it fails.

p.s. - what is a transit worth to a scrapper?

Scappers deal in metal, and it doesnt look like there is much of that left on that van.

I guess I meant breakers, rather than scrappers.

Either way - if its got to go do I turn it into a cube or see if it has some saleable parts?

Defiantly has saleable parts so think it's worth ur while breaking it if u have the space or perhaps buy a cleaner van with a broken fuel pump or something and use the parts of ur own one to repair it :D

I dont really have the space, tools or know how to break it myself. Not a bad idea looking for one with a fault I can swap parts out on, although I'm thinking I'll downsize so maybe dont want another Transit!

Its worth breaking 100%...

i just paid £20 for 2 ford badges on ebay :(

While looking for a starter motor yesterday, second hand ones were only £20 cheaper than brand new!
