Private plate transfer

Postby jacky » Fri Aug 25, 2017 5:42 pm

Probably get a quicker reply on here rather than contacting dvla

Thinking of downsizing my transit and have a private plate on it. I would rather keep the plate on the van to see if i can get the price i want rather than take it off then end up keeping it if i dont get what im after

I would be transferring it onto a retention certificate.

On DVLA website it says - Your private number will be removed straight away if you apply online.

Any one done it this quick ?

So i would be hoping to remove it when the buyer has paid.

I've done it, its instant.
You take the plate off, £80, then you get given the old plate to put back on.

Takes 5 minutes.

But you wont have a v5 with the correct reg to give to the buyer so if you're wanting to keep the plate its probably best to do it now and give DVLA time to get the new v5 in the post.

I've done it online as well. Takes 5 minutes, but do it at least a week before you sell because it takes a few days for V5 to arrive

There was a funny thing as I recall
You transfer the plate to you're new van on line
Then it won't let you tax it
So you have to ring the dvla up and speak to a person yuctch :x

And don't forget.....if there has been a break (when donor vehicle has not been taxed or sorned) in the previous 5 yrs it won't allow you to take the number off the vehicle online (again you will have to ring and sort it with a human) just had this when I went to take the number off my merc......they did it no problem over the phone....when I asked why the said it was because the merc had been with a dealer for a few weeks before I bought and was neither taxed or sorned during that time....even though I taxed it the day I bought it and I put the number on it a week later.....I've also noticed that they've also added to the rules that the donor vehicle "must be able to move under its own power" which my old transit couldn't at the time I took it off that a couple of years ago ( it was half a van with no engine or box) that rule was not in force at the time I did it but noticed it on more recent paperwork.
