Swapping Luton Body to new Van MK6 to MK7 or MK8?

Postby cormie » Sun Sep 24, 2017 8:28 am

Hey folks,
I have an Alloy Bodies Manchester Luton body on a 2005 350 125 which has developed this problem and I'm wondering if I might need to trade vans.

If I end up getting a MK7 or MK8 model, does anyone know how the luton body with trim and all around the cab will fit? Is it simply a case of undoing bolts and electric wiring, getting it lifted onto a new chassis cab and doing up the bolts and wiring? The tail lift is usually part of the body and not related to the chassis from what I can see.

Are all chassis cabs the same length or do I need to get a LWB one or perhaps another one even?

Has anyone done this with a body from Alloy Bodies Manchester, and how did it work with the trimming around the cab? I'm thinking it might be different and won't fit in the same way? Also, what kind of cost would be involved I wonder?

If anyone has any feedback it would be great :)

It'll fit straight onto an equivalent MK7 chassis.

Mk8 will require modification round the cab

Make 2x steel tressels
Unbolt the body jack one end up slide the tressel under
Same again at the front
Drive your old van out from under it and drive your new one in
Jack up tressels out
I did it to a few 40foot spud bulkers when i was a little girl we only had a little fork lift
Just make the trassels so one end bolts on so you can slide it under
Half an hour job :P

Haha, thanks a lot for the suggestion. I don't have the equipment or anywhere to do a DIY job on this, but glad to hear it's only a half an hour job for someone with the right equipment, hopefully it won't cost too much in that case then!!

Great to hear it fits straight onto the MK7 without much modification needed!

Now the question is what to look out for as a new one. I'd probably want something around 2009/2010/2011 so it's less than 10 years old as insurance companies in Ireland kick up a fuss for vehicles over 10 years, but priced well enough at the same time. I also prefer having only 4 wheels on the luton instead of 6, less to worry about when buying new tyres etc and the 4 seem to carry it fine?

Been told to look for a TDDI!

Who ever told you to look for a tddi is on drugs or still lives in 2003. All MK7 are TDCi

I was told on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=182328&p=1557283#p1557283

Actually, the exact words were "get yourself a nice reliable Mk6 TDDi or a Mk7...", so maybe they meant TDCI for MK7, but that MK7 TDCI's don't suffer the same issue?

That's good to know, but there's no TDDI MK7's at all then? Is there 1998cc 4 wheel MK7's that are reliable and don't have the same issue as the MK6 ones I guess is the question :D

there's no 2.0L TDCI on a Mk7. They come in either 2.2L or 2.4L flavor (and some rare 3.2 5pot beasts and 2.3 petrol ones ;) )

most have single wheels on the rear axle. iirc only the 460 and 350(HD)(downplated 460s) type used to have twin wheels.

Thanks a lot for the info! Good to hear that most have single wheels at least. It's getting a bit complicated as to what I should go for in regards to year, engine etc for the best reliability for long distant, heavy loads as I do furniture removal across Europe and I'm based in Ireland so probably not much selection here anyway :o

Make sure to get one with the same wheelbase as ur mk6^^
swb are 2933 mwb 3300 lwb 3750 iirc
u can look ur wheelbase up with ur vin no on etis.ford.com

dunno if theres a difference for ur body mounts whether its an fwd or rwd chassis. better stick with the same type u already have.

prefer one from mid 2008 on with 6speed. they got more mature over the years ;)

Is there such a thing as a fwd chassis cab?
Even if there is the chances of finding one will be about zero
There's not many fwd lwb 350 s about and the ones that are have been turned into dogs arse washing vans

Thanks a lot for the tips, will check out the sizing, pretty sure I have the LWB as the luton floor space is 4m so it's long enough :)

This is a 1998cc FWD 2005 TDCI luton I have, so it was a chassis cab at some stage before the box went on :D
