transit mk2/3 diff ratios - getting told 2 different things

Postby Vandalism » Wed Apr 11, 2018 6:23 pm

basically...when i was looking on here a long time ago everyone said to get a 4.63 from a minibus or ambulance, so i bought an axle from a lwb mk2 minibus (ive not checked the tag or anything)

now everyone on a couple of transit facebook pages are telling the opposite, saying vans have 4.63 and mini busses 5.14, every time the topic comes up people are saying thats the right way round despite being told the opposite on here

im confused as to whats correct, can anyone clear it up for definite, as i was adamant mini busses where 4.63 but ive been told point blank its the other way round, by some people, some even on here who im sure previously said minibus 4.63 van 5.14 :?

Diffs and axles could have been changed on vehicles of this age so the only way to know for definite is count the number of teeth on the crownwheel and pinion, or mark a wheel and the propshaft and rotate a full wheel turn and count the number of revolutions of the propshaft.

It will be something like
pinion = 7 teeth, crown wheel = 36 teeth - 5.14
pinion = 8 teeth, crown wheel = 41 teeth - 5.14
pinion = 8 teeth, crown wheel = 37 teeth = 4.63

Are you wanting?
more pulling power and less top speed = 5.14:1
or more top speed but less pulling power - 4.63:1

4.63 is supposed to give you a better cursing ratio rather than revving your nuts off

would the axle have a tag on it somwhere

the question im asking is what ratio vans and mini busses have as now apparently its the other way round to what was previously said

Back in the day we had twin wheel lwb vans an Minibus’s most of the Minibus’s had a higher top speed 4.63 diff but not all of them the vans had the lower 5.14 dif they just ordered vehicles straight from dealers stock and they’d come with different specifications but if you look wear the diff pan bolts on if tag is still there it will be on one of them

Vans could have 5.8, 5.14 or 4.63
Minibusses could have 5.8, 5.14 or 4.63.

The taller diffs are slightly more common in minibusses but it definately cannot be called a "minibus diff".

As Matt said, no such thing as a 'minibus diff', they could be spec'd with different ratios just as vans were.

Count the pinion/crownwheel teeth, or the road wheel to propshaft revolutions, then you will know for sure.

its 8 or 10 bolts to undo to pop the back cover off and its stamped on the edge of the crownwheel.
