Transit County 4x4

My latest toy, a 1991 Transit County in lovely matt black! Formerly with the RAF Fire Department, and with very low miles on her. I've already racked out the rear for my work stuff and added some extra security. I had a swb Transit 100L that I was breaking up as the body and chassis were full of rot but it had a recon engine 2 years ago, so I pulled the County motor and stuck the recon unit in. A new starter and high output alternator have been fitted, as has an alarm/immobiliser with remote starting and paging system. Next I will be fitting a split-charge system and new striplighting in the crew cab and rear loadspace, along with CB and PMR radio sets.

Tyres are a land Rover favorite, 7.50 R16 Black Star Guyane on the rear and 7.50 16 Deestone Extra Traction on the front, rims are original County but I'm told that Iveco Daily 16 inch rims will fit any six studder Transit. Clearance might be an issue, the tyres are approx 32 inches diameter and mine did sometimes catch on the rear arch edges, had to nip the corners off the arch bottoms and cut the back edge of the front bumper away!

Any MOT problems? Do you revert to originals, or does your County just sail through?

The MOT station just happens to be right next door to where I get all my welding and fabrication done, they see the County as a 'special' vehicle and have raised no issues with it!

Even had them inspect the new bullbars we made for it, and said they were perfectly legal and within the regs.

As far as using the big tyres, they dont foul the arches or stick out beyond the bodywork so are ok to use. The only 'issue' was the odd Deestone on the back axle, as it is a crossply and the BlackStar Guyanes were radial, now all are Deestones so not problem anymore.

Nice to know there is still good sense in some MOTers.

Talking of tyres there are loads available on Fleebites of varied prices and unfamiliar makes. Can they be worth a shot or are they just for the chelsea tractors?
