Make sure it doesn't rattle when first started, There's no leaks from the diesel pump and check if its got a genuine ford fuel filter especially if its a TDCI

Run it up to temperature, stop and re-start it to check it re-starts easy. Just drive it hard and check there are no knocks from things like the engine mounts, clutch or suspension, turn the steering lock to lock a few times and listen and feel for any noise or vibrations. Crawl underneath and check the sills and cross members for rust, also the inner arches. Look for smoke and that it idles nice and smooth.

Other than that its just regular things that you'd look for on a car. They are really rust prone but certain models have telling symptoms that point to a serious problem depending on which engine it is.

Wouldn't worry too much about the mileage, check to see if there is history and if you can, check the old mot's and see what the last one threw up in terms of advisories.

I paid £1500 quid for my 2001

Had engine rebuild at about 146000 with compressor and 110v electric alrun by PTO in 4 th gear great van

Got a bargin really as its has had loads of new stuff like starter alternator battery and 4 new tyres
