Tourneo License Restrictions

Postby nomadbackwards » Mon Oct 14, 2013 11:09 pm

Hello all,

I'm currently looking at 8-seat Tourneos (Mk7, around 2010-2012) and just want to clarify the law on driving them on a normal cat.B car license. I'm 23 with a post-1997 license (got it in Feb 2011). As I understand it I can drive them with no restrictions based on the following facts:-

- Being only 8 seats (1 driver, 7 passenger) they are included in the 8 passenger seat restriction, with absolutely no confusion needed regarding whether or not the driver's seat is counted as per the 9 seat models.

- They fall well within the 3,500kg MAM limit restriction - the 8 seater having a 1,936/1,939kg Kerb Mass (depending on engine), with both having a 2,800kg Gross Vehicle Mass.

- It'll be for private use - NOT commercial/hire-and-reward - as a family car for SDPC (Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting).

Many thanks in advance!

Cheers for that, Altransit - much appreciated! Had a few quotes that were acceptable (thought when the time comes will certainly be shopping around still!) on 8-seaters, while 9-seaters were a different story... and more seats than I'll ever need anyway so not fussed at all lol!

And thanks for your suggestion mealic - will try Dan when I've found the 'right' vehicle and ready to take the plunge :)

Am I also right in thinking these are classed as MPVs on the V5 so normal 'car' insurance can be obtained from companies that are willing to accept, without the need to have to go down the commercial policy route as you might for a van. Makes the whole NCB situation much simpler both to move onto the vehicle, or should I ever go back to a car in the future (I understand van to car insurance usually means you lose any NCB built up?).

Thanks again fellas,
Damon

It should be classed as an MPV, but often will be referred to as a Minibus, which it isn't

The 8 seaters are legal for car speed limits too.. 70 motorway / 70 dual carriageway / 60 single lane etc.
If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not a submarine the Cantonese will eat it
