Which Transit, VH or VG

Postby Chucaro » Sat Oct 29, 2016 4:25 am

Hello you all,
I am considering purchasing a LWB high roof van to converting it to a campervan.
I have very little experience with them apart of driving a 19701 V4 LWB service van when I used to work a maintenance fitter. (she was bad indeed!!)
I live in Tasmania so problems of rust are not as bad as there are in Europe.
My budget it is limited to $12000 (Australian dollars) which can allow me to buy a VH 2003 2.4 turbo diesel with about 250000 km or a VJ with the same engine with little more money.
Which it is the best transmission (reliability)? I am happy to drive manual if it is the best.
Are there any difference between the vans and bus regarding handling? I guess that an ex bus looks attractive because the saving on windows and perhaps they are look after better than a cargo van.
Your inputs are appreciated. :)
Cheers

So a vh is a mk6? , and I take it a vj is a mk7?

Firstly, the asm (auto shifting manual) gearbox never gets great reviews from what I've heard, but there's probably more of them over there.

I've had both mk6&7 and not really had any bother with them. The mk7 needs to have been looked after, look for genuine filters and device history. It should run spot on.

Thank you for your reply
VH it is from 2000 ( http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... 277/?Cr=17 )
VJ from 2005 ( http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... 5934/?Cr=3 )
In 2006 also we have the VM with the same 2.4 turbo diesel but with different front shape ( http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... 297/?Cr=18 )
In 2010 we have the VM 2.2 turbo diesel engine

Is the 2.2 engine much better that the 2.4 or both are Ok?

Cheers

So the vh and vj are very similar, I presume the main differences will be abs/electronic speedos etc ( forgive the unfamiliarity with Tasmanian model specs) :)

More or less the same vehicle if the same as uk specs

The vm (mk7) is a very different beast. Most would say that the 2.2 is less reliable than the 2.0fwd or 2.4rwd vh & vj

either the 2000 one or the 2008 one as they're both manual
No the 2.2 is a worse engine suffering from holed pistons and failed pumps
the 2 I suggested both have the same engine but different fuel delivery systems

Thank you guys for the inputs, so the 2.4 manual will be the option.
This is what I am considering as a better option than a cargo van. Have to find out how high it is inside, I am 1.850 high.

There's a few knocks on the passenger side, most are easy to fix but the on top left at the roof may be fiddly.

All in all it looks good and clean plus you could sell what you don't need I.e seats, big yellow handles (they go for good money over here) etc

Not sure what the exchange rate is from aus dollars to pound. N

Sorry that I have expressed myself wrong, I just put it as an example of the model that I considering thinking that a community bus will be looked after better that a cargo van.

Thank you guys again.
It is interesting the comment about problems with the 2.2 engine, it is the same as the Land Rover 110 in which they do not have that problems here.
