Gear ratio...

Postby ratata » Sun May 24, 2009 10:31 pm

Hello folks!

First I want to apologize for not searching previous topics in this matter, but thats just because Im a Swede and dont know really WHAT to search for...or the correct words for it (Im a Swede). Anyway, I have 06' 115 bhp 5 gears Transit. Its a motorhome. When travelling at 90 km/h (56 mph), the rpm is like 3 000, or slightly over. Its far to high, it makes you to want to wear ear-muffs. It MUST get lower! So, here are the Q's:

1. How can I tell our current rear axles gear ratio?

2. Where can we find different pinions for the rear axle?

3. When we find those pinions, should we go for the highest ratio or the second highest? From what I understand, this engine comes with three different ratios with this gear box and rear axle...and I belive I have the lowest ratio EVER made! :D

I hope I didnt confuse you all with my 'Swenglish'.

Rockn'roll to you all

1, put your VIN on here and we can look it up on etis to get the van details (or goto the etis website and sign up for free)

2, couple of different ways, replace complete axle, replace diff assembly or replace crownwheel and pinion

3, Depends what you do with it, lots of motorway driving, round town driving etc :?:

simple really :D

p.s. you probably talk better english than I do

-> 'coconut': -hmm...VIN-code, you say. All this German is gibberish to me, but I think VIN-code is "Fz-Id.Nr" in German. It's WF0AXXTTFA5D44442. I know you gave me a link, but I feel safer a pros checking it up! :D

Anyway, the vehicle will be seen mostly on motorways, and very rare on onkel Jims meadows...

Happy happyhour

:D

Well, at least I didnt have the 5.88 axle! :D Theres only one way to go now, the 4.63! Thanks MinorMatt!

Since England is the major county in EU for Transit's, and Swedens the minor, where can I get the gearwheels for this? Do you guys know where I can ask for the 4.63 cogs?

...or (I forgot to ask this), is it possible to simply exchange the gearbox to a 6-shifter?

I found this rear axle: WF0LXXGBFL1G86993. Is this axle of any use to me? I know its a single wheel axle, but maybe the crown wheel and piniong are the same? :?

Spot on, just what you need! It will be easier just to swap the whole axle rather than playing with the diff.

I like the registration date though!

Ok! But what about the hubs? This is a single wheel axle, mines a double. Are the hubs replaceable?

The axle casings are different for twin and single wheels so you cant just swap the hubs :(

As for the CWP (cogs :) ) they look the same for twin and single wheel but ive never tried swapping them :!:

Changing to a 6 speed wont make any difference unless you put the rear axle from a 6 speed in as well ( you could go as low as a 3.77 then which would be about 1800rpm at 50mph 8) )

This means I will still have to swap cogs in hte diff since the casings are different. Minor problem! I guess I will have to measure up some shims when the works done though.

However, 1 800 rpm at 50 sounds neat!! :D

You need to get someone who has done diffs before as the rolling torque, pre-loads and back-lash needs to be done by adjustments not shims :!:

This car was given to Jesus on his day of birth. It took another 34 years before he could drive it, because back then, they had a hard time deciding what was left and right. This made Jesus to fail 16 times before holding his drivers license. If you look carefully at the vehicle, you will see that even when he got the license, something went wrong. The car ended up smashed in Ådalen in Sweden after a long trip from Syria. Dont ask me how it got here, but now I got an ancient rear axle!! :D
