I was quoted ...from...£500 yeah right!!!!! I've heard £150 a side is normal. But as said can be done for @£60, just done mine on ldv convoy, spent a week few hrs a day trying to get out in situ., no good, took axle off, ground cotterpin down either side then drilled out, took out circlips and caps on hubs, got a drive just smaller than kingpin,a sledgehammer and a m8, we bashed out the kingpins, cleaned everything up, tappedbearings into place and pushed kingpins into place, no shims required, its said to assemble all onto van and preload to shim, i did this and made no difference, so just reassemble off the vehicle, then reassemble on van. Knowing what i know now i could (i think lol) do an axle removal etc in a day,i ,other than knock pins out worked alone, with a m8 you could do it all in poss 4/5 hrs. If the king pins won't budge at all you could by a recon one ( convoy one is £235exchange) so transit poss same price.

Thanks for the replies guys, not phased by the use of a large hammer and some swearing but i have been told i will need to ream out the new bushes in the stub axles which i can't do, but i am interested that you can get exchange re-con units, now the next question is where can i get an exchange unit cheers........Rich.

I haven't done it however i was told that you can cut the brass sleeves out with an hacksaw blade then a round file to clean up then assemble new kingpin set, it maybe that you can insert a set of kingpins with bearings, convoys apparently had sleeves but later on had bearings like mine. Google ksl liverpool for a starting point for a recon axle, they are helpful guys there, ask for barry.

To be honest though, the hardest work will be removing the axle, you may be lucky and the kingpins come out in situ. Worth a try first.

Just had the kingpins done by a local garage, i took the axle off my van and dropped it to them and they charged me £145 to do both sides including the price of the kingpin set. Now all re-assembled, MOT'd and back on the road.

It's reaming the new brass bearing insert to size that's the problem to do at home, it depends where the play is? up and down? just change the bearing pack and or shims, if that is the pin comes out, had one last year on my press it maxed out at 40 ton so we left it for a while to have a cupper and when the pin went it bounced around the workshop and we dropped the bloody tea

The chap who did my king pins said he only hit them once with a hammer and they both just fell out, maybe that's why it didn't cost that much because he didn't have to spend hours getting them out.

99.999% its just the thrust washers that collapse due to lack of grease, worst case is if pins are seized you have to press them out . we used to do them in situ with a decent air chisel :D worst ones to do were the A series :x

I had mine done at a local garage 4 years ago, £138 fitting and £23 for king pins which I bought off Ebay. Good job, no problems.
