Transit Cuts off then will restart

Postby swimmingeasy » Sun May 12, 2013 8:01 am

Transit LWB 2.4litre year 2000 Axle R11 Diesel manual
The vehicle starts easily and drives well for 10 to 15 minutes, then cuts out. It will start shortly after but only goes 10 or so metres. When cooled down it will repeat the cycle. Driven to the mechanic who did minor service, checked fuel (ok) correct oil (ok)

CODES: P0650 Mil Control Unit, P1563 Fip Req Engine Stop, P1664 Fip Malfunction, P0380 Glow Plug Control Circuit, P0216 Injection timing Control Circuit

Noted that glow plug 2 shorted to ground, replaced glow plugs, and some faulty wires and fuse replaced: then Codes are P1563 Fip Request Eng stop; P1664 Fip Malfunction; P0335 Crank Angle Sensor fault/pump timing fault. Cant the computer can be confused if the circuits/wiring are faulty.

I read on a Transit post from (jon2076 » Sat Nov 05, 2011 4:02 pm) that his Transit 2003 85 t300 swb fwd, diesel had the same behaviour as above and was fixed by replacing the fuel metering solenoid cable which had a very minute split in the outer covering so shorting out on the F.I.P

Can the Fuel Metering solenoid cable be just unplugged and replaced without any specialist tools or adjustments? What else could it be? The mechanic is just educated guessing and charging, and looking at all the big jobs, next is the timing chain, but it might be going to the wreckers if that the case.

How's the timing chain? Any rattle from start up? That's could put timing out.
If timing solenoid was faulty van would have heavy diesel knock when running.

Runs smoothly, no noise, runs quietly, no knocking sounds.

Mechanic who has the vehicle commented that this model doesn't allow the timing chain to deteriorate or make noises because it stops the vehicle before it gets to bad. Not sure this is correct. Any comments?

Any timing chain can fail. And if it does it a t 70mph it will do damage,so that theory is nonsense!

Had the vehicle towed to a fuel pump, turbo etc specialist in Western Sydney, who ran diagnostics. He said codes strongly suggested that the diesel fuel pump should be replaced. Quoted $4K+ for reconditioned fitted, but when asked if that who resolve the problem, he's only 80% confident. So the guy who sold it to me said the pump AP44 had been changed over and tested, but the stalling problem still occurred. The Ford mechanic who specialises in brakes, did a minor service and changed the rear brakes shoes, and got a mobile specialist who diagnosis Transit Vans to suggest it is a timing chain issue, then he wanted to take off the front cover etc to feel the timing chain. Didn't do that. People just guess relative to their experience ansd specialisations. Next the neurosurgeon who may suggest a anuerysm only disabling during running at moderate speed!
