Mk4/5 Rear twin wheel hubs to Mk1/3 axle?

Postby RP123 » Mon May 20, 2013 2:52 pm

Hi guys,

Does anyone know before I go messing around stripping axles to see if they fit, if mk4/5 rear twin wheel hubs will fit the mk1/3 twin wheel rear axle casing?

I've fitted mk5 ifs front suspension to my mk1 and I'm going to stick with the 15 inch wheels and want to know if I can swap the hubs over on the mk1/3 rear axle I will be fitting so that I can fit 15 inch wheels to the rear too.

Cheers

I *think* the wheelbearings are a different size. Whats wrong with fitting the whole mk4/5 axle?

Thanks Mat,

The mk5 axle is wider, spring saddles need modding etc don't they to fit the mk1? Plus the mk3 axle I have to go on has a nice low mileage 4.63 diff in it, the van its on has done 10,000 miles from new.

Cheers for your input guys. :)

Looks like I'll be taking things apart to see what fits what.

I was aware Ken B used a mk6 diff in mk1 axle casing, he told me in a email. I want to use the mk3 axle I have for my mk1 without disturbing the diff but would like to use 15 inch wheels all round as I have fitted mk5 front IFS suspension which already excepts 15 inch wheels, if its gonna end up being alot of faffing around I'll have to have a re-think on the wheel situation. :)

Get some 15s redrilled to 6 x 170? (assuming the center bore is the same)
