Van cuts out once warm???

Postby Fishinghunt193 » Fri Aug 01, 2014 1:40 am

Hi all, NEED HELP!!! I have purchased a Oct 2000 Duratorq DI 2.4 (120PS) transit van with 345000 on the clock. while driving it home (2 hour trip) the van was driving very well then a hour into the trip the glow light on the dash came on and the engine cut out, the car would start again straight away and was fine at idle but if you tried to drive it you would only get 30/40 meters and it would do the same thing! I soon learnt the longer I left the car to cool down the further it would drive e.g leave it for 10 min it would drive for a 15 to 20 min, leave it for 30 min it would drive for another hour!!! when i finally made it home (6 hours later) i took the van to my local mechanic who did a diagnostic check to find 3 x errors, crank angle sensor (code# PO335) battery/voltage (code# p1665) and injector pump - engine stop request (code# P1563) the local garage changed the crank angle sensor and it made no change to the van at all! another diesel specialist figured it could be the duel mass fly wheel? I have no history on the van at all as the pervious owner will not return my calls and it looks like he has tried to sort the issue out also before giving up and selling it to me without telling me about the problem (asshole) looks like its had a new alternator and starter motor put in recently but other the that i don't know any history. CAN ANYONE HELP WITH WHAT DIRECTION TO TAKE NEXT ? I HAVE SPENT A FAR BIT ALREADY AND HAD NO LUCK??? THANKS PAUL

ok start basics first..change fuel filter for a gen ford one..
check wiring over the engine as its known to chaff through...
also what scanner did mechanic use as not many will read the mk6 vans
possible cylinder head temp senser is failing as well.

Hi and thanks for your response.
The garage that did the first dianotsic was just a small country work shop with not much experience with transits so I then to it to a diesel Specailest you diagnosed the same codes so I just figured they must of been correct! Should I take it to a ford dealer to have it checked before I do anything else??? I will check the wiring now but do you have any suggestions as to where a should start looking? I will also pick up a ford fuel fiter!
Cheers Paul

You have their the common faults with the fuel pump electronic edu on the top of it burnt out resistors or broken wires in the harness ,if it was the cylinder head temp you would have the code plus flashing glow plug light but live data would confirm this using ids, could tell you if faulty or not

also check if the pump has ever been of the van :?:

Hi Karl, I'm going over the wiring again today buy finding it difficult to trace as many are tucked away and hard to get to!
I did find a small burnt out wire that came from the jump start point under the bonnet and goes to the fuse box not sure of its purpose but will replace it today. Is there some way to tell if the pump has been out of the van before? What are the tell tail signs??? Thanks for the help. Paul

hi their paul

the faults are in the edu on top off the fuel pump you have to take cap of and look at it am afraid :(

but as for seeing if some one has took pump off is check fuel pipeing for any spanner marks also has the sealant round the timing cover different to fords :?:

Hi could I jump in here with a very similar problem that i think Karl may be able to help with - very similar prob to this van cut out aa came and got codes P1665, P1664, P1663, P1665 and P1608. Heres the key thing that seams to have struck a cord with Karls comment on here - my glow plug light was flashing as van cut out and when trying to restart - Karl you mention cylinder head temp???? also the aa man did find the starter motor and wiring was loose (poorly fitted at a recent replacement) this also links to another comment ive seen about chaffing wires... any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks Pete

Thanks Karl, have booked the van in to have the EDU checked later this week. Hope this sheds some light on the issue!
Will post the results on here when it comes back. Cheers Paul

Thread is 7 years old...best you start a new one as some the people you're replying to haven't been on here since writing these posts.
