Mk7 locking/unlocking fault

Postby mikeouk » Sat Oct 25, 2014 10:58 am

Sometimes van won't lock/unlock with remote
Sometimes just cab will unlock but rear doors won't , but if I start engine for a minute and then stop it and take key out, the remote will unlock the rear.
Also I've noticed if I stop engine and the radio is on, it will turn itself off after a short time, it used to stay on for an hour before turning off.
Could it just be my battery is on it's last legs? It's a 7year old van with original battery.

You've probably got two batteries, and the front one is dead

Thought there was one battery under drivers seat. Where would other one be?

Beside it if it has two :) Shove the seat forward.

I just googled it, seems it's rwd that have twin batteries or fwd if specked as an option. Mine is fwd and I didn't pay extra for an extra battery when I ordered it

I've read this before and it confuses the hell out of me in the case of single batteries, as there was mention of similar effects as twin batteries but the front 1 failing, if the single battery couldn't cope with unlocking the van i really wouldn't expect it to start the van which takes considerably more power :-(
But i personally would go with checking your key fob, it is rechargeable but may not be holding, that said tho I'm going on the idea that you can get enough power from it to single unlock the front doors but then it goes flat on second press.
If that isn't the case then it must be ghosts
Have you got a spare?
Also the battery should be replaced anyway i think, the radio turning off quickly it's a good sign that the battery isn't good, you can get it drop tested at most decent garages.

Just checked and my van does have twin batteries.
So the front one is the one that could be duff?

Yes, it powers the locking stereo etc, the rear is the start battery.
The front one fails first usually, however if the are original the rear one won't be far from failure either!

Twin batteries standard on all rwd, and most 330/350 fwd

Optional on smaller fwd
