Oil filter housing leaking

Postby jacky » Mon Mar 02, 2015 8:52 pm

Done a service on the van and when I put the rubber seal onto the filter housing I put it to the base (marked in red) and yep it pissed out oil.

Having searched for a picture on the net I see that the seal sits up a bit. So when I moved the seal up it left a gap when I screwed the housing hand tight there is a gap and doesnt screw fully up . Is that normal ?..............if you follow me

Gap is not right , did you use socket to rescrew up or just hand ? if hand use socket and do up till gap is closed but not tight

Yep done it by hand.

So do you reckon the seal is too far down the housing ? or would it go that far down anyway when tightened ?

cheers for quick reply

Seal/"O"ring only goes in one spot....as it is in the picture, not down where you put it, hence why it leaked everywhere. When you screw it up into place, the seal sits on a shoulder inside the aluminium housing on the engine.
All you needed to do is refit the new seal/"O"ring where the old one was removed from...job done. The plastic filter cover doesn't need to be done up tight, just turn it by hand till it bottoms and back off a couple of mm, this makes it a lot easier to remove next time and can be removed by hand, which means less chance of damaging the plastic hex.

Got the filter housing back on but there is a small leak from the seal.

Gave it an extra turn but don't want to tighten too much. Any ideas what I could try?

Did you lightly coat the seal in oil as that helps it make a good seal

Yes, Mk7.

Cleaned it off last night and after a 40 mile drive its ok. Not a drop to be seen.

Might have just been the excess oil that was sitting in the grooves when the oil was spitting everywhere.

Cheers

Excellent...I usually give the filter cover a good clean with petrol after removing it, then blow it off with compressed air or just wipe it and allow it to dry. I then coat the new "O" ring with a little vaseline or engine oil, pop the new "O" ring into it's groove...fit the new filter, spin the cover on by hand until it bottoms and back it off a few mm and all is right with the world.
