Problems changing ignition barrel

Postby TIDY » Fri Jul 03, 2015 9:48 pm

My 2002 mk6 has a very worn barrel and 2 keys, I bought a brand new ignition barrel with 2 keys from ebay that have the blue bit for the transponder. I put my transponder in one of the new keys and changed the barrel.
The new barrel & key light everything up but it dosent start (nothing not a sound) so i then put the old barrel back in and thats the same (no start) i try for about 10 or so times to start and then it fires up, and fires up every time after that. I then try the new barrel and key again and same thing happens (no start)
So i try the old barrel again and exactly the same, dosent start for about 10 or so times then it fires up (and every time after that)
I repeated this 3 times and had the same thing happens.

Why is it that when i fit the new barrel it dosent work and then it makes the old barrel not work for a while ??? Got me baffled so i hope somebody can explain. :?:

The barrel is just hardware, make sure that it and the original are identical and that they fit identically ie distances from the pats ring etc, just rules that out.

Make sure the transponder goes in the key the same way around and fits identically as it does in the original key.

Make sure that the new transponder is away from the keys and that there is only the one new key with old transponder fitted is the only 1 in the vicinity.

Try that, maybe check for damage at the pats ring.

I reckon the switch at the other end of the barrel is knackered

Thanks for the replys guys.

The barrel looks identical, and the pats ring sits the same on both.

Im just stumped that after fitting the new barrel the old barrel dosent work for and amount of time/or key turns ?

I reckon AKE is right...the switch itself is probably knackered, not the barrel or keys.

The old barrel and keys are badly worn. But like you say it could be the switch (but why does it work ok with the old barrel)

Anyway, is the switch easy to fit ,I will try and have a look sometime this week if i get chance.

It is on the mk6 key :-) ppl swap them rather than reprogramming them sometimes.

might be worth just calling out a locksmith to recode the system, then will know for sure

I'm doing a mk7 ignition barrel and can start the van with the switch in my hand with a wide enough screw driver to turn and hold the key in pats ring

Ok, so ive just fitted a new Ignition switch and im getting the same thing happen with the new barrel & key, So now im thinking its the new barrel thats at fault.
I cant seem to find a good quality barrel and keys with the blue transponder tab, The only thing i can find online is the cheap ones (that ive already tried to no avail)

Does anybody know where i can get a good quality barrel with 2 keys with the blue tab ? That way i can transfer my transponder chips into them.

You've already got 2 good keys with the chip, so why don't you buy a build it up barrel to suit your keys for about 20 from Ford?
