Im removing the whole panel including Tacho, its of no use to me, most likely put it on a well known auction site. Its from a 2013 minibus

If it's a vdo unit I'd change the battery in it before you unplug it if the internal battery goes flat and it's not plugged into the van the unit will go blank and will be totally useless
Make sure it's still plugged in when you change the battery else you will ruin it !!
just follow the onscreen instructions and it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is, we keep producing better idiots

And dont you also need to swap the jumper plug in the wiring loom, beside the inside fuse box under the passenger side dash?

How long do those batteries last in service and how do you tell that they need changing BEFORE they go flat?

depends on the state of the battery. usually a month but that is when they are new. a 5+ year old battery might last a week if you are lucky.

there is no way to know. yo would need to remove the battery while the unit is still connected and tested. officially they need to be replaced every 3 years or so depending on the brand and type of tacho. in practive the batteries die 1 week after the warranty expires. so technically the battery if is "designed to last the lifetime of the device".
