2.5 TD Epic Code reading required or help!

Postby BL Convoy » Wed Oct 18, 2017 11:20 pm

Hi,
Not strictly a Transit, but a "W" plate 2000/1 LDV Convoy with the 2.5TD Banana engine in.
I have a problem with it - the engine management light is on all the time and its as slow as a snail. It struggles to rev to 2.5/3K even in neutral.
I have checked the timing belt/pump timing (as per suggested on other searched posts and all seems ok).
There was a fair amount of white/corrosion build up on the ECU case (which is located on the O/S front wheel arch in the cab) so I opened it up abd there was a small amount present. A gentle clean and refitted.
After is was reconnected the EML was still illuminated but it drove a load better/as it should for between 20/30 seconds, then it went flat again - into limp mode?

Does anyone here have suitable the equipment to scan/read the ECU/fault codes at the farm where the vehicle is kept? I am in the Midlands/Worcestershire area. The van isn't insured/MOT'd/taxed, so driving it to someone isn't really an option.

Thanks in advance :|

When you checked the timing, you used 3 correct sized pins?

Did mine tonight too... Pump was a 6mm pin, cam was 8mm and Flywheel was a 12.9mm pin...weird as I used to do loads of these and used x2 8mm pins and a 10mm are the TD,s just different?

Normally aspirated DIs are 13mm for the crank and 8mm for the pump and cam. TDs are as you say, 6mm for pump.

Yes, it was from a multi-fit timing pin kit.

Start it up, let it run for a few minutes, then stall it in fifth gear, whilst turning the key off just after.

Restart it, if the light stays out, and it runs ok, you need a new stop solenoid.

If there is any doubt about the timing belt, change it. They don’t need much stretch to put the light on

Just a bit of added info which I forgot to include first time round, but on reading your reply maybe relevant.
When you come to stop the engine and turn the key back to the "off" position the engine keeps running, (the battery light illuminates) if you then turn the key forward one position (auxillary) the engine cuts out... strange :?

You may have just found the problem then, faulty stop solenoid :)

I can probably get to you to read codes... but you definately have an ESOS problem which will put you in to limp mode...

OK, quick update.Tried this tonight and initially did it twice and the engine management remained on. On the third (time lucky) attempt it went out and stayed off for the short term. A quick blast down the farm track and back to try it, the van drove a lot better, with a lot more power. 8)

It looks like the problem is as per your diagnosis, spot on!
I have looked at your guide and it looks straightforward enough (I have already had the multiplug disconnected and the top cover off/adrift once).
The next question is where do you get a new plunger from?
I have dealt with the single terminal Bosch/Lucas CAV external solenoids before, but nothing like this. Are the a Ford only part or avialbe elsewhere?
Nice guide by the way!

I have had a look around the 'net via google, but with no joy. Are you able to supply a new one and if so what kind of money? Message me if you prefer. Thanks

Hi I have same problem as BL Convoy with my recent Auction Bought 1998 VG 2.5 "saw me coming"
I have only recently joined and am unable to pm anyone as yet.
Have been unable to source any parts to do repair in Fremantle W.A. OR other states in Australia
but no one wants to know about lucas epic pumps. :(
I can buy the whole ESOS actuator but it's like replacing an engine cause the starter wont work.
I am chasing the 2,O rings as well as the plunger + spring for the ESOS if anyone can help me please. :D

Hi MinorMatt, have read your How To on ESOS thanks for that.
You mentioned you can supply the plunger so was wondering
if you still can supply along with spring and relevant O rings.
If MinorMatt is unable is there anyone else who maybe can ?
My Epic details the Blue Tag are
DSA 1190
05721D5G MD
8720B050A
Any Help is greatly appreciated and I'm looking forward to responses.
