Pinto Engine Squeak in rocker box

Postby jstevo » Mon Nov 20, 2017 9:35 pm

I have a 1986 Mk 3 Transit, It has done 150000 miles and has just developed a squeak on the top end of the engine. I have had the rocker box off and checked the valve clearances and looked for any broken springs but can;t find anything obviously wrong, sounds like the rear camshaft bearing. Any suggestions please.

Was there plenty of oil around when you took the rocker cover off? Has it had regular oil changes? These engines had a habit if blocking the cam Spray bar if changes were neglected or bad quality il used.

Are the cam lobes or rockers worn I have had them with a wave effect on the rocker fingers before , if you end up fitting new parts defo put new spray bar on don’t try clearing it out if it was mine I’d give it a new spray bar and a oil change to see if that sorts it ,
If you need to put a new cam in it comes out of back of engine so it’s head off or remove engine to do it I have heard of someone drilling a hole in the bulkhead and removing the heater but that was not on a transit some outher Ford

There was plenty of oil on the camshaft at I poured oil on it but still squeaks when you crank the engine over. Have checked oil spray bar with airline and this seems clear. I have always used Shell Helix 15-40 oil and have never had problems like this before. I have refurbed the head once some years ago, new valve seals, recut seats ect.

I’d sill put a new spray bar on you only need one bit of crap in there to block it years ago mate of mine put a fast road cam in his RS2000 by the book the only thing he did not fit was anew spray bar he did on the second one first one lasted less then a thousand miles
.blowing it out with a airline may seem all right but just think haw many times you’ve blown out a washer jet think it’s clear only to find first time you try it it blocks up again because all you have done blower the dirt back in

I have found out what the squeak is in my rocker box, it is the cam belt rubbing on the backing plate, I don't know why the belt should be over that far as the tensioner and pulleys look in good order but there was some oil on the belt from either the camshaft oil seal or the rocker box gasket, have now changed both. Thanks for all your suggestions.
