New oil very thin - straight out the box......

Postby KevofCov » Sat Nov 25, 2017 10:47 am

I’ve just brought 20 ltrs of Gulf 3w50 for a routine service. When I poured it into my jug it came out more like water than oil. Bit of a suprise – the thickness is very different to all the brands I’ve used before. Should I be worried? Or is this new?

Sorry - I'm sat at home and have a blank regarding the grade. Its certainly the same as I've always had (that was the first thing I checked). 5w30 now rings a bell. I'll check Monday.

0w30 is pretty watery but I try to avoid buying anything that requires modern oil technology so not sure about 3w50

Hi
I can confirm that its not 3w50. This is a typo

It is 5w30 - same as I always use.

Hi Gents
I owe you all an apology. The new gulf oil left the shop and travelled next to the heater in the cab.
The original container was at outside temperature. Hence the difference. School boy error.
My wife says I’m an idiot. My mum says I’m special.
Sorry
Sorry Gulf
Can this thread vanish please?

Most modern oils these days are pretty good...they don't sell if they're crap. 5W30 is the oil Ford recommend for the tranny...I use 10w40 full synthetic in my tranny here in Aus due to our silly temperatures in summer, but I'm sure 5w30 would be fine too. I found the oil pressure was a tad lower than I would like @ idle in the middle of summer with 5w30...so a switch to 10w40 had my pressure back to something more reasonable....I only noticed because I fitted an oil pressure gauge...if I didn't have one, I'd be none the wiser..

What sort of pressure are you seeing? Mine fluctuates between 30 & 80 (think that's psi) obviously higher when accelerating and lower at idle. N

Hope yours isn't reading in Bar..!!??

Yep...similar to mine...When cold I see ~70psi @ idle....when warm it's ~30psi...maximum pressure when driving from cold start is ~90psi @~2500rpm 100kmh (60mph)....but it quickly drops to ~70psi @ when the engine warms up and just doddling around town etc...
