What does plate mean?

Postby nznikin » Tue Jan 23, 2018 4:57 am

As in I hear a lot of people describing their van as say 51 plate or 68 plate. Is this something only applicable to a certain country? Can't seem to find any info about this.

Cheers,
2011 2.4L RWD Duratorq-DI (115PS) – Puma, 6-speed 350 LWB High Roof.

Cheers,
Number is the year it was registered but can be depicted as a letter on older ,and the plate is just people referring to what year it says on the REGISTRATION PLATE / number PLATE

Ah I see, this is the UK plate format. In NZ we do not follow this format.

Used to be even harder with Y plates etc!

You’d have to try and remember the year that the letter corresponded too

Aye uk plate format, new number plates come use twice a year so a 09 plate is early 2009 and a 59 plate is late 2009. N

The U.K. system is confusing I like the Southern Ireland setup for a vehicle registration in Dublin at the start of the year it will be 181 D 1234 then in June I think it changes to 182 the D represents the country it is registered in so if it was registered in Caven it’s a C

But it would be so much simpler if the "year" ran from 1st Jan - 31st December, as it did when registration suffix letters started in 1963

Yes it would, I still don't know why they changed to 2 a year, I think everyone should be issued with a plate that follows them from vehicle to vehicle.

Speaking of plates what's the legality of front plates as I keep seeing chavs with either no front plate orbit wedged in the windscreen. N

They moved it from January1st to August 1st in 1967 (XYZ 123E) only ran for 8 months) because the motor trade felt that new registrations would be easier to sell in the Summer, rather than at Christmas. The two a year thing is so that there are now two promotions a year, to try and sell more new vehicles.

You can even get them to support your local football or rugby league teams too.!!
