Mk7 Euro 5 Engine cranks but won’t start

Postby Andysvan36 » Thu Apr 12, 2018 5:38 pm

Hi guys, so on Good Friday Morning my van would crank over but not start... I had driven it home the previous night with no problems or signs that anything was wrong. The fuel light was on but hadn’t been on for long, the RAC came out and he thought it may have run out so we got diesel in it and he tried to prime it by turning it over...

No joy so over Easter I fitted a new fuel filter, glow plugs as I had them already to go in, and bled it at the injectors (which it was getting fuel to)... borrowed a friends noid kit which lit once then would not pulse again. I then fitted a crank sensor and still no joy.

Got the van recovered to Transit mechanics their Master Tech carried out IDS, he it thinks the timing has skipped a tooth and they want £420 (4hrs Labour) just to check...

I got the van in September and 2 weeks after getting it the timing chain stretched so was sent under warranty to get a new timing kit, rang the dealer I bought it off today and his mechanic reckons it can’t be the timing.

What would you do?

Hi mate, the garage I had it in couldn’t give me a readout if the ids that was done, getting it recovered elsewhere on Monday to a transit mechanic all they did was have their master tech come out and have a word.

I’ve heard the ignition switch in them can give bother and I went up today to get some tools out of it and noticed the key is very wobbly when in the ignition.

The fact that the van didn’t show any signs of anything being wrong the night before makes me question it being the timing.

Hopefully not anyway and it’s something stupid.

Key barrel has nothing to do with the ignition switch...the switch just plugs onto the back of the barrel assy.

Got an update from the mechanic yesterday, timing is perfect... he says the pcm isnt picking up that the crankshaft is turning. Hes tried a new cam sensor and went over looms. Hes had to go back to working on another van for a bit. Fingers crossed ill have it all resolved soon.

He tried a new "Cam" sensor or "Crank" sensor..?? There is one of each...they need to be in "synch" or she won't start. It's more common for the crank sensor to fail or become loose, check to see if it's correctly fitted.

Had a similar problem, van driving perfect pulled into services for something to eat, went back to van and it wouldn't start, gave it a sniff of celly spray paint and it started and drove home, ended up having to change PRV to sort

Don't think the Euro-V's have the same PRV like the Euro-IV's.. :?

I fitted a new crank sensor and the mechanic tried a cam sensor in it.

Ahh..!!...If the cam & crank sensors/looms are ok and there's no camshaft sense.....I wonder if the cam chain has let go..??....Have you popped the rocker cover off to have a bit of a look..??

I fail to understand how the EGR can cause the "cam or crank sensor" fault..?? :?
