nearside brake light

Postby dboss1 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 10:24 pm

Ford Transit Custom Van 2014
nearside brake light not working - changed bulb but makes no difference

check the wiring plug over and all looks ok

Metered the voltage and notice that there is continuous 10.28v which drops slightly when you press the brake pedal.
checked against the working side and notice that is 10.28v but rises to 11.9v when you press the brake pedal.

any suggestion on what I'm missing here - cant see any fuses that relate to the brakes and worried its a wiring loo fault

any help really appreciated as this is frsutrating

Does indicator get affected if brakes on? Poss bad earth to cluster?
Silly question have you checked the contact the bulb pip touches isnt pushed too far in? Wooden stick or careful poke with thin screwdriver may raise it up few mm if needed? If it's that?

Was engine running when you tested voltage before? May be low if not running and all ignition etc on?

Hi thanks for the replies...
Update so far.
check earth and cleaned it up - all good and test on cluster loom all good
checked connection on the cluster behind bulb - all ok
check wiring loom all ok
checK voltages again - this time with bulb in its holder (doh!!) - no voltage when press brake pedal (other side gives 12v) - I'd metered it when bulbs were out so gave different readings!!

Guessing there must be a fuse somewhere?? any suggestions as can't see one in the manual.
thanks for any help.

Is the same fuse for both sides, if that's what you mean.

I have a Mk 6, but I suspect is same.
The wiring is very simple: one wire to the back (left side/passenger side).
Then goes to right side/"near side".

The holders were really bad on mine: got rusted.
Easy and cheap to replace: not worth cleaning if very bad.

If I were you, I would:
(1) Test both bulbs are OK (connect by wire to battery, see they light up
(2) Measure supply on both sides vs ground: should be SAME value, there should be ZERO voltage drop in between
(3) Can run temporary wire from Left side (main supply) to the Right side bulb holder
Can pull holder out of light fitting, and hold wire to correct place, and have someone else press brake.

This will test bulbs, holder and wiring.
Either one is not good or else you are having a problem in your testing.
