Mk6 fwd power steering belt

Postby Jamie2792 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 2:40 pm

Hi was driving home yesterday when out of nowhere the steering went notchy and hard to turn when going slowly and turning sharp. Pretty sure it's the power steering belt, looks loose and is making a small knocking noise. Am I OK to drive it tomorrow? need to get it to a mate I'm no mechanic, if it snaps will it likely do damage? How much of a job is it replace?
It's an 03 swb fwd 2l mk6

Cheers

In Mk6 FWD steering pomp is mounted on water cooling pomp - both are powered by the same belt.
If steering pomp doesn't work (because of broken belt), engine is not cooled, because water pomp also doesn't work.
So - don't drive van :!: (maybe only one minute, if you must move it for very short distance), because of the certainty of damage engine (overhiting).

For good mechanic it is 20 minutes - half an hour of work. It can be fixed on the street only with opened bonnet.

Could also be damaged/worn splines between water pump and PAS pump...quite common.
