2008 2.4 DRW 115ps cutting out

Hello everyone, I'm new here and need some advice. I purchased the above van 3 weeks ago with 40k on the clock with a full printout history. It has been fine up until yesterday when all of a sudden it cut out on me while I was sat on a slight upward hill in traffic. It started straight away and i carried on to the job. However it has now done this on numerous occasions and I am growing quite frustrated. I have been told that it needs to go in to Fords to have the software for the ECU updated as they sometimes act as if they have picked up a virus. Can anyone confirm this?. Or does anyone have any other ideas?. I have to add that, although I would normally buy a MB, I went for the Transit because of the problems with Cat converters being nicked from the Sprinters and up until now have been delighted with the drive and comfort of the thing, even with it being a luton tail lift!.

firstly get the fault codes read and then yes see if there is a pcm update available through the ford ids computer, this can cure the fault but these engines normally bring up either the engine light or a cog with exclamation mark in it when they have a fault
