Can also be due to basic pump timing being out,or slack in the chain between pump and crank sprocket, there was a TSB for this concern after pump replacement.......

If it runs ok but with a loud/harsh diesel knock, timing solenoid on bottom of pump probably failed as mentioned.

Timing looks ok but there is a little slack what's the best way to take it up? Doesn't seem to be a diesel knock, is the solenoid the small part on bottom of pump with 2 torx fixings, is it a simple removal and replace as have one on another pump in case?
Thanks for all your help so far

Timing solenoid is the other side of the pump to that plate, got two wires going to it. Yes its as simple as remove and re fit, cut wires then re join them, soldering prefferaly (DONT try and unplug it in the module on top, you will kill the modle) Also, dont get the timing solenoid mixed up with the metering one that sits between the injection pipes on the back of the back of the pump and also has two wires going to it

sounds diesel knocky but not like the usual solenoid failure as it gets better with higher revs :? tickover sounds ok. I would still replace the solenoid, but just out of interest where did the pump come form, was it a recon one, as it should be a warranty job. If however it was a second hand unit, you may be stuck with the cost :(

Pump was taken from a good engine we have, I have another solenoid I can try just didn't think it would be that? Reset timing gold links in line with points, turn by hand 2 turns and all pins locate correctly although chain does seem to click and jump up a little when turning by hand?
