Some Tips needed for First transit!

Postby PistonMeetValves » Sat Jul 05, 2014 10:38 am

Hi guys,

I'm going to be looking at a MK5 Flairside 1997 'R' Reg (101K miles) today, and was wondering if you guys could guide me (via internets!) how to give it a good look over! I was wanting an SWB/LWB Van, but they're kind of thin on the ground and MAF (manky as... y'know..), so Pickup it very well may have to be!

I'm mechanically minded, so main problems would be welding/bodywork issues. I know these Bananas are bomb proof!

It looks very clean, so must have had some remedial work done at one point, just hoping you guys could point me out all of its weaker areas, as the guy wants a good price for it.

Many thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Thanks for all the responses guys! Although to be honest, I expected 'rustrustrustrustrururururuur' to be honest

Gave it a good drive, shes patchy around the doors, but solid as. Had some good repairs to chassis rails, and all belts done and welding on bottom of cab corners looks fairly sturdy. Payed my monies and I should be driving the big boat in around a month! (Have a few... space and angry parent issues!)

Thanks again, finally got my Transit!

Will be pestering you guys at the next Scottish contingency meet lol

Don't worry about parents ;)

They come around when they realise how useful a transit is

Hoping so! Don't really want a hiding! Had too many cars, so I can see where my Pa's getting the rage from. But it will be definitely handy.

One more thing, I thought the gear stick sat a tad low.. Is the top of it threaded? Could I get a gear extender for it?

Cheers for the responses :)

Hahaha! its probably the Scottish, we're all like that lol  Cheers, good to know its threaded!

Another question! The throttle pedal seemed stiff when I was driving it (quite stiff!) but it worked fine on the drive. Are they all electric throttles? if mines a 98 flairside, will it be electric, or is it something I can disassemble and grease?

The cab does need a clean, could be the problem!

Unless yours is a turbo, it will be a cable throttle

Excellent, had a look last night too, does look like a cable (didn't have enough time to check thoroughly), infact, I'm sure it is a cable. Looking forward to greasing it, its bloody near solid :O

Cheers again guys!
