Engine identification

Postby chasnjess » Fri Sep 12, 2014 1:11 am

Hi I have a transit 100 based campervan which has been changed to a diesel engine. Can anybody identify which engine I have as replacement parts are a nightmare as they ask for reg number which comes up as the previously fitted petrol engine. I think it is a banana engine but with an older air filter system to fit into smaller engine bay. Any help please ENGINE NUMBER IS 924F609DB
Thank you for any help...........Bruce

engine bay is same size on the petrol and diesel engines only diffrence i have seen is transmission tunnel is diffrent on autos and manuals... and ones with type 9 overdrive are slightly diffrent in shape to later mt75(and the hole for stick in diffrent place)
post a pic of engine bay and engine and someone will tell you rough year of engine as well as rough year of air filter, someone mioght even tell you part numbers of filters u need along with timing belt as they changed mid 1997(I think 97 they changed)

Hi thank you for your reply it appears to confirm my thoughts, however my last transit with the same engine although noisy as with all banana type, certainly does not drive the same. I could cruise easily around 60 to 70 going faster when needed however this one doesn`t seem happy at all over about 50to55. My problem is the van was bought with this engine in it(changed from petrol) so I do not know the mileage or condition etc I have serviced it including new timing belt and water pump and although miles better (quieter) it is the same when driving Has also had new clutch, starter, lift pump and the lucas pump has been replaced because I had a diesel leak, with a bosch pump. Sorry to go on but being the usual very noisy engine it is difficult to hear big end noise etc.
If I let her run about 50mph it will go forever but twice when I have pushed her faster on a long run it seems to have a kangarooing type of effect when slowing down to park (both in forward and reverse gears) Doesnt overheat but leave her to cool and off we go again
Hope you make sense of this and any advice or ideas would be helpful as I do not want to case good money after bad ...... Thanks Bruce
PS literally everything passes me on motorways, good job no bikes allowed

Thats a bit of a hybrid engine... looks like a mk3/early 4 engine with the later pump on.

If you look at the drivers side of the engine (injection pump side) there will a year cast in to the block near the ford logo.

Your engine it is propably 1986-1991 4BA, 68 PS with originally CAV Lucas pump (as on pictures), swapped later for Bosch.
Look for pictures and for thermostat housing - you have exactly the same - aluminium. Engine with Bosch has ebonite housing.

Your biggest problem it is timing belt.

Historically in 2,5D engine was three different belts:

- 1984 - 1991 belt teeth are 2,5 mm high, belt width is 25,4 mm (part nr 6138677) - it is your
- 1992 - 09/1997 teeth are higher 3,5 mm, belt width is the same 25,4 mm (nr 1135355)
- 09/1997 - 2000 belt width is bigger 27,6 - 28,0 mm (nr 1135354).

All belts have 130 teeth.

Crankshaft and camshaft wheels in your engine have lower teeth (first version), but what about Bosch pump wheel?
I think you must use belt for first version - because belt with lower teeth can work correctly on pump wheel with higher teeth. But not inversely!

To be shure - check engine type code:

Silly question (and sorry if I missed this) but did you change the injectors with the pump? The bosch pump can be fussy, not liking injectors from a bosch pump with another code, let alone from a different make of punp

Engines 2,5D from 15.10.1988 got new Stanadyne injectors - SLIM type ("pencil") - as on photo, it is 1989 engine.
For CAV LUCAS: Stanadyne nr 26964, Ford nr 894F-9K546-ACA (sign white)
For Bosch: Stanadyne nr 26632, ford nr 894F-9K546-AAB (sign red or orange - I have two different info sources).

Injectors for CAV LUCAS have lower opening pressure.

Hi thank you for informative info. This bosch pump was fitted on advice from my garage as although lucas 1008type drove well it had a leak somewhere and the Bosch would be a better unit anyway The number on replacement Bosch pump appears to be
465-530-662 Do you know what injectors are compatible if needed
The pump came off another transit but not sure which model Many thanks..........Bruce

The numbers on the pump don't appear to be the right ones...

From the pic it looks like a post '97 one (based on what little I can see of the rear bracket) and is therefore likely to be a 646, 646-1, 646-2, or 646-3.

I would say any post '97 non turbo injectors would be fine - so long as you fit a complete set.
