difficulty starting 2.4 di 52 plate

hi all my dads having a problem with his 52 plate 2.4 di diesel 90 tipper
the engine needs to be turned over 6 or more times before it fires,he changed the fuel filter,thinking it could be that,i though fuel running back to tank,but if you switch it of and try starting it it still needs turned over many times before it goes
the engine runs fine when started with no loss of power
any ideas would be appreciated

filter housing,also get a code read done as well just to make sure their is nothing lurking around code wise

and if getting codes read be a idea to find someone with ids as most other code readers wont read these very well.. but start basics first.. and also look at the fuel pump and see if its wet as its possible the solenoid on it is leaking..

sorry meant to add in original post sometimes the starter spins
il get him to check the filter housing is that to do with the water getting in at back?
il also say to him to get it checked on a diagnostic, is the IDS the 1 ford use or would an independant have access to that equipment?

might sound daft asking but is that air filter or diesel filter housing?

if the starter runs slowly or noisy you mast to install another starter and check, change something or not.

its occasionally it spins when trying to start it,il get him to replace starter then go through the other suggestion including a diagnostics
il post and let you's know if it fixes the problem

replaced starter and filter head,starts occasionally and cuts out now and then.he gave up and bought another tipper as mot was due aswell
so transit tipper for sale spares or repairs lol

Once started does it rattle for the first few seconds?

we were thinking fuel pump,he gave up wish it in the end,was taking it for diagnostic
and it broke down and his breakdown cover only brings him home,so just bought a replacement,suppose its hard to diagnose without putting it on machine
