Starter motor problems

Postby Northcountryboy1976 » Thu Sep 25, 2014 12:36 am

Hi

I have a 2005 transit jumbo 130 6speed.

Last week it started making funny noises when I started it, later that day when I went to start it it just made a noise and refused to start.
AA called, guy says its the starter motor, tries banging it. Doesn't work. He tow starts me and I get home
Van sits outside house for a week until new starter motor arrives.
Tonight I took old one off and fitted new one. I turn key and nothing. The old one at least still spun when I turned ignition.
I took it off and cleaned the terminals and refit. Still nothing, no clicking or spinning.

Any ideas what might be the issue here. It's tight getting the old one off under the van, thinking I might have loosened a connection elsewhere when trying to turn old motor around to get at connections.

I took new one off and tested it with a battery, it spins fine.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Connection are all good. I put them on like for like. Positive power and the dual orange cable onto the 13mm nut and the smaller single cable onto the smaller 10mm nut.
I took starter off and cleaned all connections then refitted.

Re timing chain. Once AA tow started it I drove it for 70 miles and no issues.

What is swarf?
