limp mode - power loss

Postby dg solutions » Fri Oct 03, 2014 8:09 pm

Hi can anyone help me, I have a 54 135 van with 143000 miles. I have had this van since 64k it has been serviced every 8000 miles fuel air & oil filters every time. The problem I have is that when ever I try to accelerate above 65 up hill down hill or on the flat the engine goes into limp mode and loses power, if I turn off and re start it is fine until I get back up to speed. I can accelerate as hard as I like, but as soon as I get up to 65-70 it goes into limp mode. I have read other posts about power loss, it has had a new water pump about 18 month ago but in the last two months I have fitted a new egr valve fuel filter air filter air charge mater and still the problem is there. I cant keep throwing money at it what's next HELP !

Get a leak back test done, and prepare yourself to buy a set of injectors

It is impossible. If the engine goes into limp mode - you must get errors, probably P0251 or/and P1211. Use good tester.

Usually it is only first step... :(
Because if injection pomp is worn-out, injectors renovation can help only for short time. In Delphi tdci, if injection pump is ok and in good condition, injectors can leak back very, very much - without limp mode.
I think you have worn-out both: injectors and pomp...
Try do first injectors - not only valves, also sprayers it is good to change (only original Delphi parts). Check for metal filings in fuel in injectors.
If they are - pomp is broken, don't try start engine again. In this case, whole fuel system is for rinsing, pomp for regeneration in Delphi workshop.

A generic obd tester won't read your van... what scanner do you have?

No, faults can be deleted only with the help of good tester.
If you can't read any fault after limp mode - propably tester is wrong.

But: does the glow plugs indicator blink during limp mode? If it doesn't blink, than engine can be in overhiting mode.
In this mode I didn't have any faults and any lights on dashboard ... But engine works just like in limp mode, engine fan works for full and a.c. is off.

In my case temperature sensor was broken...

Thinks for your help guys, the glow plug light dose flash when in limp mode, as soon as I re start all is fine. Will change the injectors next and see if that sorts it. By the way after changing fuel filter and air charge sensor the problem has got worse, any ideas ?

Took all your advice on board had codes read with good tester came up with fault injection flow adjustment. Then had leak back test done turned out to be all four injectors had it. Had injectors done problem solved. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Did you check the fuel filter for metal swarf etc? Probably just the injectors but assuming that the problem occurred fairly quickly and all 4 injectors have failed, well, if it was me if take wojciech advice and check the pump anyway. Imo
