Intensive Cleaning and Early Rust Treatment

Postby cormie » Wed Oct 08, 2014 5:49 am

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advice on cleaning up this van. As you can see from the pictures, there's some pretty tough looking areas and I haven't a clue what the best way to deal with them is. I was recommended a steam cleaning valet company but I think this needs a lot more than that?

The pop rivets on the side of the box are protruding and are a little rusty with some rust stains trailing below them too.

Then there's also what appears to be some kind of tar like substance on the side where all the black specks are.

I want to get sign writing on the van and don't want the rust to ruin it after a few months.

Any advice would be appreciated!

hi the rust is easy to fix you need to wire brush the rust and get an acid called phosphoric its the main ingredient for rust inhibitor a little paint brush [artist brush]on the rust leave on overnight should go black coverts it to metal and primed and then a good quality rust proof paint and a bit of CLR i dont know if you get that product in uk to get rid of the stain :) clr stands for calcium. lime.rust. remover hope this helps :D
if it's not broken don't fix it and Don't panic there is always a solution

Thanks a lot for the reply. I think I must have missed the notification email that a reply was posted so sorry for the late reply.

That doesn't sound too bad for the rust. I'm in Ireland so not sure where I'd find these things.

I've been told elsewhere that steam cleaning may indeed be a good solution for getting the rest looking somewhat as good as new :)

You could try this Phosphate Primer that has a high zinc content on prepared metal areas.

Can be sprayed, rollered or brushed.

Five litres for £28.50 delivered - Industrial strength.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion and link! I was recommended this too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jenolite-JRR038 ... s=jenolite

I wonder are they similar?
