How can you get access to rear of van when froze ?

Postby Marauder » Wed Nov 26, 2014 10:35 am

2008 SWB 2.2....Yesterday went to my van temp (-3) hit the remote front doors unlocked ok,Started the van ok then thought that I had to get something out of the rear of van.Rear doors still locked.Switched off,Pressed the remote and it never opened the rear door locks,( Must of been froze up )So no way could I gain access to the cargo area.2 hours later when the internal ice melted then remote worked ok.. So this made me think,How would you gain access to the cargo area if you had a normal lock problem.
So the question ...... When the remote does Not open the rear locks, How can you open the rear doors to get access to the cargo area,???????????????

This may sound stupid but did you remove the key from the ignition and then press the unlock button? :o

Did you hear the locks clicking :?: Are you sure the doors were not stuck to the rubbers :?:

I had something similar yesterday morning, and like the post above suggests, it was the door stuck to the rubber. Couldn't open side door for love nor money, had to go in back doors and give side door some 'gentle' persuasion from the inside.

A "slight smearing" of Vaseline around the orifice will help you gain entry

But seriously though, if you apply a thin coating of Vaseline to the face of the door rubbers it does help this time of year (the doors stick to the rubbers due to the moisture in the soft foam part of the seal freezing :!: so the wax in the Vaseline acts as a barrier) not sure how of low a temp it would remain effective at but I havnt had a "stuck frozen" door since using it :!:

PS big tubs for a quid at Poundland

When the rear locks never operated,, It was not the doors stuck to the rubber,I tryed to open the rear door as well but that lock would not open either,It only happens when temp gets to about -3 or -4 rest of the time I do not have a problem. But I trying to think of a way of opening the cargo area doors if for any reason the remote stops working. So far Im thinking of a long cable like an old choke cable fitting it into the bulk head and then along the inside to the rear door lock then try and pull the handle up ?????

I wouldn't recommend using vaseline on rubber seals, it's petroleum based and will probably attack them.

Either a light smear of silicone grease, or even a drop of engine oil would probably be best
