Bad news Karl :-(
Thought I'd take apart my vcm2 number 2 the same as yours and they are made by blind drunken ppl:-(
Very poor quality compared to my first vcm2 from another seller.
First 1 lasted a year, has 8gb memory card and quality components.Image
Second 1 from obd2tool.co.uk.(shower of shite) 4gb sd card
Image
Looks like it has been repaired and resent out as new :-(
They've replaced that c30 capacitor.Image
This looks suspicious too.
Image

Might indicate what needs replacing on it tho lol.
There's also a small transistor that has been replaced and some components that are askew like they've been fitted in a hurry :-(
My vcm2 3rd 1 that now has no Wi-Fi will be the same poor quality too.

Well i can swap bits over and trial and error it to try and fix it, i was leaning towards fixing the first vcm but that wouldn't help would it lol, I'll have a go at number 2 same as yours but if by luck i fix it, the next thing is finding out exactly what components we need.

Well I'm sat in my van like a knob and have been for an hour with vcm 1/2/3 trying to get 1 to go faulty and die, tried Wi-Fi and usb on all and have done a self test and upload the configuration.
No pump learns etc but would any of them break? Will they hell

Goin back in the house before the kids come and chuck sticks at my van

I think you may still have the £600/year Ford subscription to add on top of that price.

Got new VCM but now it missing some component.
looks like it design fault or chinese used wrong parts but if you press both PCBs together small part on upper PCB will be cracked.
I saw in loot picture that black socked was pressed inside and was made from soft plastic to make place for that tiny part.
Mine is made from hard plastic and no space left.

Can any body open their VCM and see if that part exist?
Attached picture from internet about which component I'm talking.

VCM still works but not very confident to use it without parts...

There can be different designs of the boards, so they might have done same pcb but they use different layouts of components.

So it might be ok having yours different than others. Not 100% sure that this is the case at yours, but it is common practise to do the pcb:s and designs so.

I got my own vcm2 working better with changing that cap I informed earlier but if your's is working without issues, I would continue using it.

Mine still has ocasional other issues that I'm not comfortable but it will do its work for now.

Yes, I saw a lot of different PCB designs. And looks like they are all different by quality and price.
Also bought one from ebay seller he promised that this one will work with CAN and k-line, has 8gb card. So fingers crossed. All my other units do not work with K-line modules.
This one which I mentioned before which arrived without part, has proof that part existed, there is solder on PCB in that place. It can read and erase errors but I'm to scared to perform PCM updates with this one.

Is your VCM 2 still going strong since changing the capacitor last year?
Think I need to do the same as I'm having the exact same issue you were now :( especially in cold weather, happens much less often once the VCM is warm.

Did anyone ever figure out what voltage for the 10uf 0805 capacitor? Seen some 16v ones online.
